Douglass Yearby Carver Jr.

June 4, 1943 — August 12, 2024

Douglass Y. Carver, Jr. died surrounded by his family on August 12, 2024, after a short bout with lung cancer.

Doug was born in Durham, NC, on June 4, 1943. He attended Southern High School where he played basketball, baseball, and golf, placing third in the state golf championship his senior year. He married Sondra Sue Olson in 1970 and welcomed daughter Terry Jane Carver soon thereafter.

Doug and Sandy met at IBM, where Doug worked in several positions before ending his 30 year career there as a systems analyst. He made many good friends at work over the years and enjoyed retelling numerous hilarious tales from his tenure at Big Blue.

After retirement, Doug pursued his construction interests, becoming a general contractor and building a house on their Chatham County property for Terry and her family. Always generous with his time and skills, he helped many friends and family with building projects (and other jobs) over the years. He may not have expressed his love with words, but he certainly did with deeds.

Doug relished the holiday season and got great joy out of he and Sandy's over-the-top Christmas decorating and legendary Christmas Village, shared with the community at an annual Open House. They enjoyed their snowman collecting and decorating as a year-round shared hobby.

He was a beloved son to Douglass Y. Carver, Sr. and Bettie Lee Cheek, brother to Diane Carver Lawing and Cindie Carver, husband to Sandy, and father to Terry and her husband Shai Tamari, but he truly shone as grandfather to Cassie Lee Meyer, the late Carver Edward Meyer, and Christopher Douglass Meyer. "Grandaddy"--in all his relationships--will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

An informal celebration of life open house hot dog lunch will be held at the family home on August 24 from 12-2pm, 1940 Whippoorwill Lane in Chapel Hill.
