Donna Freeland

Donna Lynn Freeland, 67, peacefully passed away on October 1, 2015 in her Hillsborough home. She was born on February 29, 1948 in Durham to the late James John and Maxine Hayes Freeland. In addition to her parents, Ms. Freeland was preceded in death by her brothers James Rae Freeland and Jack Irvin Freeland; her sister Joan Freeland Hopper; her niece Lori James Freeland; and numerous aunts and uncles. Ms. Freeland is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Nahale Freeland Kalfas and Nondas Kalfas, and cherished granddaughters Ralitsa-Kona Kalfas and LanaJames Kalfas. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty James Monk Freeland, and brother-in-law, James Ellis Hopper, Sr.; beloved nephews and nieces: James Ellis Hopper, Jr. and wife Deborah Underwood Hopper, James Landon Freeland and wife Janet Renae Freeland, Jeffrey Freeland Hopper and wife Kelly Niland Hopper, Zachary Rae Freeland, and Lori Hayes Freeland; aunts Sue Hayes Riley and Aurelia Trimm Hayes; and numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. Ms. Freeland graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1966, then attended Chowan College. After working at The News of Orange County, she went on to assist her family in the daily management of Daniel Boone Antique Village and Boone Square. For more than forty years, Ms. Freeland enjoyed working alongside her father, sister, and brother-in-law. Ms. Freeland became the family's matriarch, and as such she served as dedicated steward of the family's businesses. Ms. Freeland leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, always generously shared with her tight-knit family and close circle of friends. Hers was a life well lived. Visitation will be 2-4 PM Sunday followed by a brief memorial service from 4-5 PM, October 4, 2015 at the Big Barn Convention Center in the Daniel Boone Village, Hillsborough. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM) or the Hillsborough Fire Department.
