Delmar Brown

February 15, 1921 — December 6, 2012

Delmar "Red" Brown passed away December 6. He was 91 years old and a lifelong resident of Hillsborough. Delmar was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Boone Brown and his parents Tom and Jessie Parker Brown. Delmar graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1939. Growing up, longtime Hillsboro High School principal Grady Brown was his mentor and a positive influence in his life. In the 1940's, he was employed with Seaboard Railway in Raleigh as a Yard Conductor. While there during World War II, he captured two escaped German POWs that were hiding in a boxcar. He described them as hungry, scared, and cold young men about his own age that had no idea where they were going. He shared his lunch with them and returned them to camp. In 1947, he opened Brown Motor Company which he operated over 65 years until his death. He served on the Orange County School Board in the early 1960's, was a past Master and longtime member of the Masonic Lodge as well as the Lion's Club. He is survived by his son Dale and his wife Martha Brown of Lewisville, NC; daughter Denise Brown of Hillsborough, NC; son Mark and his wife Elaine of Weddington, NC; as well as grandchildren Elizabeth Brown Mark, Derek Brown, Megan Brown, and Kristen Brown. He is also survived by his brother, Lynwood Brown, Sr. of Hillsborough, NC and sister, Nancy Brown Wagoner of Oak Island, NC along with nephews Lynwood "Buck" Brown, Jr., Michael T. Brown, Robert I. Peede and Robert Henry Brown. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Hillsborough Sunday December 16 at 1pm. Walker's Funeral Home of Hillsborough, 204 N. Churton Street, Hillsborough, NC 27278 (919) 732-2121 is assisting the Brown family.
