Calvina (ne Gibson) Quinn, 87, passed away in the excellent care of the Hoch Pavillion, Duke Hospice in Durham, North Carolina on January 7, 2023. She was born and raised in Elk Valley, Tennessee in the beautiful Cumberland Gap. At 17, she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with her sister, Sharon to go to work, they thenmoved to Detroit, Michigan where is she met her husband, William (Bill) Quinn. With her sister Sharon, the Quinns moved their family to Panama City, Florida in 1974. She and Sharon never lived far from each other and shared a connection beyond their earthly one. Calvina loved her chosen home in Florida and made many friends. She was a born dancer and loved music, especially the country music of her era. She and Bill enjoyed square-dancing, the gourmet club to which they belonged, and pouring their energy and zest into creating several beautiful homes and apartments in the area. After Bill's death in 1989, Calvina moved the short distance to Lynn Haven, Florida, socialized with the Widows and Widowers club, gardened and cooked and truly enjoyed her home and neighbors who frequently benefitted from her cooking. She was an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer with the Second Chance organization in Panama City and helped to raise funds for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Calvina, along with her young brother Alvin Gibson, were raised in Elk Valley by her beloved paternal grandmother, Laura Bell Gibson (Mamaw). Her family included her mother, Nell (ne Chadwell) Gibson, father, Zachary Taylor Gibson, sister, Sharon Mountz and brothers, Mac and Bob Gibson who all predeceased her. She loved her whole family immeasurably. She is survived by her daughters Michele Irene Quinn and Laura Thompson Quinn, her husband son-in-law, Thomas Thompson, her son Mark Jerome Quinn, grandaughter Halley Marie Thompson and her husband Ciaran Harman, grandsons Nicholas Quinn Thompson and Joseph Elliot Thompson and her great-daughter, Frankie Jo Harman who gave her much joy. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Kathleen Foner, Catherine Quinn and Mary Ann Gibson, her nieces Belinda Betz, Barbara Lewis, Denise Moldovan, Lisa Ronalter, Pat McClain, Sandy Klos, Molly Moor, Susan Burkhart, and her nephews, Robert Mountz, Chet Gibson, Paul Quinn Jr., and Michael Foner. She also cherished the memory of her niece, Jessica Mazius. They and their extended families were all dear to her heart.
A memorial service and internment of her remains will take place at Kent-Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetaries in Panama City in May of this year. Details will be made available at a later date.
