Avery Apple

March 17, 1947 — June 20, 2015

Hillsborough - Mr. Avery A. Apple, 68, of Hillsborough passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 20, 2015. Avery volunteered for the U. S. Navy and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. A native of Hillsborough, he was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Lane Apple, and mother and father, John C. and Margaret K. Apple. He was a longtime employee at Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools. Avery was also a longtime employee of White's Furniture Company until its closing in 1993. Survivors include two brothers, Earl Apple and J. C. Apple, sister, Faye Apple; sister-in-law, Carolyn Lane, and brother-in-law, Harlton Lane, all of Hillsborough. He also leaves behind a special friend and companion for the past three years, Donna Gibson of Ramseur, as well as numerous other family members and friends, and his two loving pets, Cocoa and Katie. The family would like to recognize the physicians, nurses, and staff at Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center and Liberty Hospice of Durham for all the wonderful and caring treatment he has received during his courageous fight over the past two years. Also thank you to the many friends and family members who came to visit. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duke Cancer Center, Patient Support Services. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 21 at Walker's Funeral Home in Hillsborough. The family will receive visitors at other times at 4612 Kimbro Road, Hillsborough, home of Earl Apple. Funeral services will be at Walker's Chapel on Monday, June 22 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Crossroads Church Cemetery.
