Obituary of Kwong Tiu Ling

Please share a memory of Kwong to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rose Ling Kwong Tiu, age 82, was called home by the Lord on Oct 2, 2017 in Carrboro, NC. Rose was born on Aug 1, 1935, in Southeast Asia (Sibu, Sarawak) to Ling Ung Chong and Loi Hong King. She was married to Thomas Ha in 1961 for 3 years before she was widowed. She is survived by her youngest of 5 brothers - Kwong Sui Ling (California); 3 children and their spouses - Dr. Belinda Ha & Paul Yee (Carrboro), Drs. Phillis Ling & Joseph McGuirk (Kansas), Roland Ling & Tiong Siew Chou (Sarawak); 4 grandchildren (Matthew, Elizabeth, Onn Ping, and Onn Hui), and a host of nieces and nephews. After being a school teacher, she left her home in Sibu to begin nursing school in Brunei. Upon completion of her 3-year nursing training, she joined the nursing service in the Brunei Government Hospital in 1958. She rose through the ranks and after completing midwifery training, she became a staff nurse. In her years of experience, she was in charge of various wards, both medical and surgical, and ultimately rose to become a Nursing Sister. In her final years of service, she had the unique opportunity to serve in the only hospital in the rain forests of Temburong. She retired in 1990 after 32 years of service. Upon retirement, she divided her time between her two daughters who had settled in the United States, other extended family in Asia, and family and friends in various parts of the world. Her love of service also led to join a medical missions team to serve the needs of Chinese living in Kazakhstan. Her greatest love was being a devoted grandmother to her 4 grandchildren and a loving aunt to her nieces, nephews and their families. Rose finally settled down in Carrboro where she has lived for the last 15 years. She attended Orange United Methodist Church and later the Chapel Hill Bible Church. Her burial service will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 1:00 pm. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on October 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Chapel Hill Bible Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Rose can be made online by selecting UNC Kidney Center Gift Fund #348866 at https://giving.dev.unc.edu/donate?&p=kdny.
