Benjamin Hamlin Houck, age 62, died at UNC Hospital on Tuesday, February 6, 2018.
Born in Chapel Hill on July 4, 1955, Ben lived at Spring Glen Retirement Home in Durham, N.C. He had some of the happiest days of his life there, going for coffee, looking at his books on astronomy and maps of all kinds, listening to music, having conversations or taking walks. Ben was known for his lively curiosity and remarkable memory. He was a life time member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chapel HIll.
Ben is survived by his sister and brother-in law, Marty and Jim Stenhouse, his nephew, Shawn Wilkerson and his children, Lily and Jack, their mother, Sondra Hellund, nephew Jimmy Stenhouse and wife, Tina and and many beloved cousins and their families. Ben was especially close to the Stenhouse family who always welcomed him into the family.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father who loved and cared for him always, Bill and Jane Houck.
Special thanks go to the staff and residents of Residential Services Inc. who were his extended family for more than 40 years.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Walker’s Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin St. Chapel Hill. The family will receive visitors prior to the service beginning at 12:00pm.
