Charles Olian Gibbs, Jr., ("C. O.") of Durham, NC, 81, passed away on December 6, 2017.

C. O. was born in Engelhard, Hyde County, NC, to Charles Olian Gibbs and Caddie Delle Pledger Gibbs on January 6, 1936. C. O. graduated from John Nichols High School, Oxford Orphanage in 1955. His senior yearbook, The Log, records his mantra as, "A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grievous words stir up anger." These words rang true throughout his life. C. O. was in the United States Coast Guard from 1958-1963 aboard the WAK-186 Cutter Kukui as a Damage Controlman. C. O. never retired and worked as a skilled and meticulous carpenter; well-known and respected both in the Outer Banks and Triangle areas of North Carolina. Above all, he had a passion for studying and witnessing about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

C. O. is preceded by his parents; by brothers, Roy Gilbert Gibbs, Edward O. Gibbs, Ray Russell Gibbs, Shirrell W. Gibbs, and Columbus Samuel Gibbs; and by sisters, Leona Gibbs, Violet Mae Gibbs, and Ovis Marie Gibbs Stelzig.

C. O. is survived by a daughter, Shelby Gibbs Tyson and husband Tim; grandchildren, Jeremy Turner and wife Lydia, Abigail Ivey, and Lainey Tyson; great-grandchildren, Landon Turner, LeAnn Turner, and Jonah Ivey. He is also survived by brothers, Oliver O. Gibbs and wife Jeanette, and Alvin B. Gibbs and wife Sherry; and a sister, Clydie Gibbs.

There will be a visitation held on Monday, December 11 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home, 204 N. Churton Street, Hillsborough.. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 1:00 p.m., also at Walker's Funeral Home with Rev. Roby Turner, Jr. officiating, followed by the burial at Efland United Methodist Cemetery on Brookhollow Road.
